Another big part of my next book is that I want people to understand that tokusatsu is a cinematic art form. By breaking down its technique, I intend to show that it’s quite ingenious filmmaking and refined visual storytelling akin to silent cinema.

Some excellent tokusatsu deep cuts I highly recommend: Adventures of Tobisuke (1949, director Nobuo Nakagawa), Farewell Rabaul (1954, director Ishiro Honda), Retreat From Kiska (1965, director Seiji Maruyama) and Zero (1984, director Toshio Masuda).

Godzilla vs. Kong kind of felt like a Hollywood remake of King Kong Escapes with Godzilla shoehorned in. Adam Wingard channels Shinji Higuchi and in some ways succeeds better at pulling off a style over substance sort of film.

Unsung Heroes of #Tokusatsu 7: Toru Suzuki (1930-2012, 鈴木昶), another figure who, like Michio Mikami, worked for nearly every FX team in Japan. His long career stretched from postwar Shin Toho to Shinji Higuchi's 2005 Lorelei. He also worked on several East Asian films.
