So while it’s a different tunneling animal, “Earth Wyrm” is presumably an attempt to create a similar joke in English, by combining “earthworm” with “wyrm” (a term for a limbless dragon)

When Popp gets embarrassed because Hym knows he likes Maam, in the manga Maam stops him by putting her hand over his mouth. Oddly, the anime changes this to her just touching his shoulder. Was covering his mouth too sexual or something?

Showing the end result of a collision before backtracking to explain the sequence of events reminds me a bit of Kuririn vs Jackie Chun in DB. Although this is a bit more serious.

“Dark Aura Ultimate Hand” in Japanese is 闘魔最終掌/Tōma Saishū Shō, with 最終/saishū meaning “final/ultimate” and 掌/shō meaning the palm of the hand. 闘魔/tōma is literally “battle demon” but the 闘/tō also probably alludes to 闘気/tōki/aura, hence the localization “Dark Aura”.

Also, vol.3 of Viz’s English release of the Dai manga is out now! This volume covers Hyunckle’s stint as a legion commander/big bad, roughly equivalent to episodes 10-13 of the modern anime.

On the other hand (so to speak), neither the manga nor anime shows any blood as Kill slashes through Avan’s glove, although the effect is perhaps a bit more muted in the anime.

Vearn’s offer for Dai to join him is an echo of the Dragon Lord offering to share half the world with the Hero in DQ I (also referenced with Hadlar and Avan). And of course there’s also a DB analog…
