Like the Minister of the Left, I missed the subtlety of the Empress' plot during my first reading, and the ending blew me away. Which made me smack my forehead during the reread

I reread Empress of Salt and Fortune. Whereas the first time took me 6 days, I finished the re-read in under two hours. Knowing how the story ends, I realized how much I missed the first time around--much like the antagonist of the story, the Minster of the Left. Brilliant story!
