The one above was sold at Whicker's Auction for $2,000-3,000. Here are some of the other versions. In order they are from Kyoto Costume Institute, Philadelphia Art Museum, Minnesota Historical Society, and LACMA #FashionHistory
This week's #MerriweatherMonday is Marjorie's amazing silk bias cut evening gown, which she wore for her 1934 portrait by Frank Salisbury. She wore it with a velvet red drape with fox fur, paired it with a ruby and diamond clip and matching Cartier bracelets. #FashionHistory
Today's #ootd is Grand Duchess Maria Georgievna's costume to the 1903 Boyar Ball. She went as a "peasant" from 17th-century Torzhok. The outfit combines three floral patterns that are very different and yet are beautiful together. The душегрея (jacket) is my fav. #FashionHistory
This week's #TsarinaSaturday is one of my favorites, the 1870-80 court dress of Maria Feodorovna (although only a grand duchess at the time). It really is a fairy tale princess dress! Here is a portrait of her in a similar garment. @state_hermitage #fashionhistory
The classic lace. This one is shown here in a painting she commissioned from Simmie Knox (2000). She has worn it a few times throughout the years.
Just saw #RBG at the Supreme Court. She is not just a feminist icon, but a fashion icon. RBG's famous collars (jabots) challenged male-dominated culture. The Supreme Justice's robes were designed to show a man's tie, but RBG donned feminine neckwear. Here are some of her favs.
I listened to #DressFancy's episode on Harlequin and Pierrot and was clued into today's #ootd- "Harlequin d'eau argente" (silver water Harlequin) by John Galliano for Dior in spring 1998. Combining the whimsy and allure of the harlequin into an elegant ball gown. #FashionHistory
Happy #InternationalWomensDay! Today’s #ootd is this 1909 dress from Maria Verhaeren of New York. International Women’s Day was first celebrated in New York on Feb 28, 1909. So I like to think that a woman wore this dress at that time. #fashionhistory
Today’s #cotd is a fancy dress costume from 1820. It’s an interesting regency interpretation of the renaissance, made of satin, glaze and silver trimmings. @KerryTaylorAuct #fridayfrills #fashionhistory.
In honor of my job @FieldofFirsts, today's #cotd is all to do with airplanes! There are three fashion illustrations and one excellently executed example of how aviation has been the inspiration for fancy dress since its beginning. #FashionHistory
