German painter, draughtsman and treatise-writer Anton Raphael Mengs was born #OnThisDay 1728.
He was an outstanding artist of early neoclassicism. Pictures: self portrait (1755) + Diana and Helios from the boudoir of María Luisa of Parma (1765).
Rousseau accepted Girardin's offer and came to live at Ermenonville. Maximilien Robespierre met the philosopher here in May 1778. Rousseau died in July that year and was entombed in the garden.
Many visitors flowed during years to pay homage to his ashes.➡️

Before the Revolution, Carteaux had pursued a career as a painter. He had been a pupil of Doyen, and completed his instruction in art, travelling through Europe, before returning to France. Among his works, there is a portrait of King Louis XVI as a citizen-king on horseback.
Jean François Carteaux was born #OnThisDay 1751. He was a general in the French Revolutionary Army and designated by the Convention to be in charge of the siege of Toulon (1793). Due to his ineptitude, he was replaced by Napoléon Bonaparte. ⬇️
Painter Émile-Jean-Horace Vernet died #OnThisDay 1863. In his long career he painted battles and other historical accurate scenes, getting many important commissions. He also received the Legion of Honour for serving in the National Guard in 1814.

Domenico Brucciani
was from Barga, near Lucca, and came from a family of figurinai, plaster makers and sellers. He moved to London to work with his uncle, Luigi. Domenico became the leading figure maker in London. He made the mask of Napoleon III when he died #OnThisDay 1773.➡️
Jean-Baptiste Drouet, count d'Erlon was born #OnThisDay 1765. He started his long career before the fall of the monarchy. and sat with the radical Montagnards. During the flight to Varennes, Drouet recognised the King from the effigy printed on an assignat in his possession. ➡️
