English caricaturist James Gillray, was born #OnThisDay, 1756. Considered the 'father of modern political cartoon', in his works he depicted George III, Napoleon, prime ministers, and other important people of his time. Gillray also satirized Napoleon as "Little Boney".
Dancer and poet Teresa Bandettini, known under the pseudonym of Amarilli Etrusca, was born #OnThisDay 1763. She famously enchanted many audiences around Europe and in 1803 she also performed in front of Napoleon.
#OnThisDay 1794, Robespierre is arrested along with his brother, Saint-Just, Lebas and Couthon, all members of the Committee of Public Safety. The day before, he had made a speech at the Convention, heavy with threats, denouncing a "league of rascals" but without giving names.
#OnThisDay 1809 the start of the Battle of Wagram between Napoleon I and Archduke Charles of Austria-Teschen and the 5th coalition. In 1810 Joseph Chabord portrayed the emperor in the posture of the statue of Marcus Aurelius on a light gray horse dominating the Wagram plateau.
Went to see Treasures exhibition @Sothebys this afternoon. Apart from Napoleon's console (see post below), there were a few interesting possessions of Captain Sir William Hoste, 1st Baronet, Nelson's protégé and naval hero from the age of the Napoleonic Wars. 👌

The refusal of Pius VII to ordain bishop only the candidates chosen by Napoleon led the Emperor to call a national council, which opened #OnThisDay 1811. Cardinal Joseph Fesch took the side of the Pope against his nephew, losing the benefits Napoleon had conferred on him.
