In my personal head-canon pokemon are actually yokai. But that's a story for later.

In reality pokemon were inspired by dozens of different things, including mythology and folklore. In this YouTube video I look at five of the more obvious ones.

In Egyptian mythology Bastet eventually came to be represented as a cat-headed goddess. Like Sekhmet she was also a goddess of protection, though her sphere was more domestic, being focused on childbrith, pregnancy, children, and warfare.

Limos, the goddess of famine, breathed into Erysichthon's mouth and cursed him with insatiable, inhuman hunger. Why? Because he cut down a dryad's tree. This killed the dryad. He ended up eating himself. The gods don't play.

Rubens, "The Fall of Phaeton"
Phaeton begged his father Helios to let him pilot the chariot of the sun. This ended badly. Phaeton lost control and Zeus had to kill him to prevent the world from burning.

All the constellations have a story behind them. Cancer the crab is no different. Hera sent it to distract Heracles during his fight with the hydra. He killed it but Hera placed it in the sky as a constellation because…at least it tried?
