does anyone have favorite examples of trees in pixel art? i am happy to see anyone's favorites, but am especially looking for modular and / or large flowing ones.
experimenting with blocking out areas using indexed color. i think with the right setup this could be really pleasant.
a feature i am considering: per tile palette rotation. this would apply the current palette, but shifted.
it's working! it loaded a map from the self-contained format with a nonstandard spritesheet and correctly applied all the correct embedded palettes.
i'm going to spend the next little while fixing minor bugs and building out area sketches for my next game.
for instance battle of olympus trims the NES's 16x15 tiles down to 16x11, with a ~2 high character. they work with this effectively, with wide horizontal vistas and a sense of mystery or hidden information vertically. seas of mist and the ocean are often just below the lower edge
after one false start and weeks of getting lost and backtracking for no reason, i finished faxanadu.
the neat thing about the subtile system is that it inspires creative design of subtiles which can be used as different things in different contexts. for instance the arch tiles here share a subtile with the 16x16 square tiles.
working on a instructions file for my landspeeder, so other folks can build it / mod it.
weapons
i am including quite a bit of variety, including some really nonsensical fantasy ones, but i am too much of a history nerd to do a spiked mace on a chain (don't @ me)
