So I tried feeding Midjourney the titles of old D&D adventures. I started with module B1: In Search of the Unknown. It started off looking very "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog", but ended with . . . a 1970s flyer illustration from the Theosophical Society?

Does Midjourney not know what the Fresno night crawlers are? Or does it know more than we do?

...And even with them, I did sometimes get things that were more sad than frightening. So a lot of this is just up to enigmatic pseudo-random weirdness.

"Rock Lightning" and "A Room in the House" both get uncharacteristically straightforward results. "Tempered Voice Whirlwind" is pretty nuts. "Beast Within" seems about right.

Ooh, and I got some great results for "The Primordial Home of Damnation"!

Here's a whole assortment: "The Devil's Breath", "Darkness in Disguise", "Spokes from a String", and "The Throne of the Dead".

Anyway, back to just feeding the machine weird titles. Here are just some of the things I got out of "The Desolate Cells". There's definitely a story here, but not a nice one.

It tries to generate portraits of the most famous John Smith it knows about (synthesized with anything else it can connect to the name).

Oh, and I went off on a tangent where I tried to get the simulated artists to portray the planet Saturn. They did not cooperate. These are attempts by fake Edvard Munch, fake Jim Davis, fake H.R. Giger, and (best by far!) fake Remedios Varo.

It can also attempt titles in the styles of specific artists! Here are "Grove of Conquest" by Masamune Shirow, "Wind-carved trolls with barely-there claws" by Vincent van Gogh, "The Bloodstone Library" by Kehinde Wiley, and "The Grave of the Unspoken" by Leonardo da Vinci.
