These two are chimeras of sorts - Vinicius is meant to collectively represent Brazil's fauna, and Tom its flora. They were designed (and animated) by Brazilian animation company Birdo, who were inspired by cartoons like Adventure Time.

In the past 30 years, the Olympics have undergone a turbulent shift in scale, role, and public scrutiny.

Amidst this uncertainty, being the official face of the games is no easy job.
