The 2nd Battle of Sorauren, 30 July 1813, was Soult’s last attempt to win a significant victory during the Pyrenees campaign.

It saw an attack along a longer front than previous assaults repulsed by Wellington's army.

It ended with a chaotic retreat for the French.

I read that when he shook his head the powder could be seen.

So presumably this is "Old Charley" with his powdered hair & ribbon.

He took a few days to die, 1st August 1809.

Near disaster the French night attack before Talavera, 27 July 1809

Surprised, the 87th & 88th Regiments fell back, although the 60th stood firm.

Wellesley rode forward, withdrawing the 24th, 31st & 45th Regiments, where they drove back the advancing French columns.

Chaplains in the Peninsula War:

When one young Padre went to take a "brigade Sunday service, & placed behind the big drum... mistook its function for that of
a pulpit, and endeavoured to mount upon it, with disastrous results, and to the
infinite laughter of the congregation"

The Bridge at Vera. Capt Cadoux’s company held on, against a division, for more than 2 hours.

Cadoux & 16 men were killed, 3 other officers & 43 wounded.

Eventually some of the French managed to file over the bridge.

French casualties exceeded 231 men.

French colonial troops in the Île-de-France (Mauritius).

As well as the straw hat, better suited to the hotter climate, some units of the National Guard opted for a Polish style Czapka hat.

Aftermath to Waterloo, the casualties.

For the allies, those who could were taken to Mt St Jean Farm, which was set up as a field hospital.

The patient mortality was est 9%

But this doesn't factor how few serious casualties ever reached the hospital.
