The Plot thickens! It turns out that one of Sarah Bernhardt's painting and sculpture tutors was none other than Gustave Dore - the world's greatest gothic illustrator - of Dante's Divine Comedy fame.The 19th century, eh!

Part 3. The fairytale illustrations of John Bauer (1882-1918). Bauer died at 36 in a shipwreck that took all his family. The local papers in Sweden "fed people's superstitions that the mythical creatures of the forests (in his pictures) had claimed Bauer by sinking the ship."
Who knew? J.R.R Tolkien, creator of #LordOfTheRings, had a semi-secret talent: He was also an artist. His paintings for #TheHobbit & #LOTR are full of style & rich detail. Even after the publication of "Pictures by J.R.R Tolkien" in 1992, his art is still known only to a few.
