6 December 1642 Royalist forces under William Cavendish, Earl of Newcastle defeated Ferdinando, Lord Fairfax at leaving Parliamentarian forces in Yorkshire divided. Newcastle then took the opportunity to secure Pontefract.

5 December 1659 London apprentices presented a petition demanding the return of Parliament and an election. Soldiers were attacked as a riot broke out. Col. Hewson ordered his troops to fire on the mob; a number of apprentices were killed or wounded.

25 November 1644 Oliver Cromwell denounces the Earl of Manchester's leadership of the Eastern Association army in Parliament. The ensuing debates led to reforms in Parliament’s armies and an increased professionalism in its officers.

22 August 1620 Oliver Cromwell married Elizabeth Bourchier, daughter of a London fur dealer, at St Giles Church, Cripplegate. The couple had a devoted relationship, with a family of 9 children, 8 of whom survived infancy. Portraits in our collection.

The colour most people associate with Oliver is black, by the way he is depicted in films. In reality are no portraits of him wearing black (& few descriptions) as it was an expensive dye, so Charles I is more commonly shown wearing it!

15 May 1660, Parliament passed Acts of Attainder against Oliver Cromwell, John Bradshaw, Henry Ireton and Thomas Pride in preparation for the return of Charles II. Given that all four men were already long dead they weren't terribly aware of this...

We’ve added two more exquisite items today, loaned to us as part of our exhibit. They are portrait miniatures of Oliver and Henry Ireton by the circle of Samuel Cooper. These were last publicly displayed in 1866.

Unusual engraving of from our collection, as it's cribbed from Van Dyck's famous portrait of Artistic conventions meant there are copies of certain styles, the equivalent of Photoshop-ing someone's head onto another portrait.
