31 July 1645 Bath in Somerset was captured in a surprise attack by Parliamentarian forces led by Colonel John Okey. Okey was a commissioner at Charles I's trial in 1649, and executed as a Regicide in 1662. Image in our collection.

10 July 1645 Royalist forces under Lord George Goring were routed at the Battle of Langport, Somerset by the New Modelled Army under Sir Thomas Fairfax. Fleeing Royalists set upon by local clubmen in retribution for their depredations on the area.

5 July 1643 was the Battle of Lansdown in Somerset. Parliamentary forces under Sir William Waller were narrowly defeated by the Royalist western army; the Cornish Cavalier Sir Bevil Grenville was killed in the fighting.

30 June 1644 compounding his defeat at Cropredy Bridge the previous day, Sir William Waller and his officers were almost killed when the floor of the room in which they met collapsed and they all fell into a cellar...

30 June 1643 was the Battle of Adwalton Moor in Yorkshire, where Royalist forces under the Earl of Newcastle defeated Ferdinando, Lord Fairfax. As a result all of Yorkshire was left under Royalist control except for Hull & Bradford.

24 June 1643 John Hampden died of his wounds sustained days before at the Battle of Chalgrove Field. His loss was a severe blow to the Parliamentarian cause, as he was a moderating force between the various factions in Parliament.

2 June 1643 Parliamentarian Midlands & Eastern commanders met at Nottingham: Lord Grey, Lord Willoughby, Oliver Cromwell, Sir John Gell & Capt. Hotham. Cromwell's plan to advance into Yorkshire to support the Fairfaxes was rejected.

15 May 1660, Parliament passed Acts of Attainder against Oliver Cromwell, John Bradshaw, Henry Ireton and Thomas Pride in preparation for the return of Charles II. Given that all four men were already long dead they weren't terribly aware of this...

11 May 1645 Parliamentary commander Sir John Meldrum was mortally wounded whilst besieging Castle. This was only days after he had survived a fall over a 200 foot cliff there, as his cloak then acted like a parachute!! 😳

7 May 1631 Oliver Cromwell, together with his wife, mother & sisters, sold their property in moving to St Ives. Cromwell left his home town due to financial problems & political issues, but returned there to recruit during the Civil War.
