General Toussaint L'Ouverture, leader of the Haitian Revolution, died #OTD in 1803 in French captivity. Despite submitting to the French in 1802 in return for an amnesty, he was tricked by French officers into boarding a ship to France.

Marshal André Massena, Prince of Essling, Duke of Rivoli died #OTD in 1817. A formidable soldier for much of the revolution and empire, defeating Korsakov at Zurich in 1799 and playing a major role at Wagram.
