So now we're not only creating the original work that we really care about, but we're also creating all this other work that theoretically should do well on the platform, just so that hopefully maybe people will see that original work we care about, and might possibly support it

But that can also lead to low engagement, and that becomes a compounding problem when Twitter decides that since your work doesn't evoke rage, people are probably not interested in seeing it, so fewer and fewer followers ever see your art.

Outside of my comics, my goal, in general, is to make art that's restful- for me, for others. That's...not really gonna inspire a whole lot of retweeting, hot takes, or conflict (and I'm glad!)

And I get it. Social media prefers engagement, and what gets the most engagement? Generally, it's conflict- drama, strong emotions, hot takes. And while some artists do make art that taps into that, a lot of artists don't.

While many people do make art just for themselves, and I myself often do just that, many of us also make art to communicate with others, and if our message is missed, it can be quite discouraging.

I don't know that I have any solutions- you can try doing in-person events, and try to build up a local area following through that, but that can be very hit or miss. I do know that I think it's still worth trying, even if it feels uphill.

We follow other artists on the off chance that, algorithm willing, we MIGHT have a chance at seeing a little of the art they share. And we fight the tide by posting more and more, hoping our posts will appear to the people who followed us for our art in the first place.

This leaves many artists fighting and second-guessing algorithms that are forever changing, begging for new forms of engagement, and forever jumping through hoops, leaving less time to actually sit down and make art.
