As a lighter aside, one of HK's Divine Beasts - the Quiet Quiet Chicken - was born during these chaotic few days. In Canto, its name means 'be discreet' & is used to warn people to not disclose escape routes, etc. Shhhh! The birb doesn't want to know.

While HKers were charging towards Poly, the protesters trapped were looking for ways to escape. The ingenious kids figured out how to abseil down a bridge on a flimsy rope, to the waiting motorbikes below which quickly, wordlessly whisked them away.

Maybe those who died and fought for democracy in 1989 would not have wanted to see their history be ossified anyway. Even if we no longer have the Pillar of Shame, memories of tears and hope for change will live on. 😢
