Ryougi Shiki Thread Continued
Shiki feels that she must kill Lio not only to prevent his senseless acts of murder but to free herself from the impulse to kill indiscriminately. Only then will she have the confidence to walk next to Mikiya’s side.
Shiki however has no qualms of killing Araya who is well past the point of being human and treats people as pawns. He’s the perfect foil for Shiki as he sees death as lacking all meaning compared to Shiki who thinks of death as something sacred.
Shiki is at a crossroads. She must decide if she will continue to float or fly. She must decide what her purpose in life will be for if she has no purpose then she’ll be nothing but a puppet. Shiki though is afraid to fly because of the specter of death that hangs over her.
The dark irony is that the male SHIKI voluntarily sacrificed himself to allow his alter ego to obtain the normal life she desired with Mikiya. Shiki though still considers herself a monster undeserving of such a life even more so now due her ability to see the the lines of death.
An average life. Mikiya is her complete opposite being average in every way imaginable and a strong moral compass Shiki is envious of. Their seeming incompatibility though only draws them closer which scares Shiki because of her male personalities desire to kill.
The story of Ryougi Shiki is a story of identity, belonging, and learning to carry the heavy burden of death. All these are explored in the incredible series that is Garden of Sinners. The following thread attempts to explore the beautiful and powerful arc of Ryougi Shiki.
