St. Agnes is the patron saint of young girls, virgins, and engaged couples. She is depicted here in Cawston Church as the 'bride of Christ', as she was said to have turned down a rich suitor because she was already devoted to Christ. As a punishment she was burned at the stake.

It commemorates one of two famous boxing matches between British champion Tom Cribb and American champion Tom Molineaux. Molineaux was born enslaved in Virginia, USA, but had won his freedom through his boxing skills.

Did you know polymath Sir Thomas Browne was not only born 1605 but actually died on his 77th birthday in 1682?

Browne lived in Norwich from 1637 until his death. His home is depicted in this watercolour ‘The Residence of Sir Thomas Browne’ by A.W. Howlings (1900).

On this day 1066 William the Conqueror landed with his army in Kent on his way to becoming England's first Norman ruler. This painting - ‘A distant view of Pevensey Bay, the landing Place of King William the Conqueror’ by George Vincent (1796-1832) - looks deceptively peaceful.
