In 1591, Joris Hoefnagel was appointed court artist to the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II, who commissioned him to add illuminations to the Mira calligraphiae monumenta, a manuscript completed in the 1560s by the distinguished scribe Georg Bocskay. (The Paul Getty Museum, Ms. 20)
