For #InternationalDayOfTheSeal, here's @BranArtworks amazing palaeoart of Eomonachus, a southern monk seal! Absolutely love this!
@SafariLtd A few more:
- Bearded seal (big whiskers/mustaches)
- Baikal seal (huge eyes)
- Enaliarctos (early extinct ancestor of seals)
- Eomonachus (southern ancestor of monk seals)
Bergmann's rule states warm environments are ideal for small mammals. We would expect the equator to act as a barrier for large marine mammals.
The high number of equatorial crossings for true seals was unusual, but likely made sense if they were small. I decided to test this.
It's been 1 year since the description of Eomonachus, the first southern monk seal! Here's the amazing reconstruction by @BranArtworks #FossilFriday 🦭

My colleagues and I described this large extinct seal last year, which used sharp teeth to bite down on its prey #InternationalDayOfTheSeal

There are also two monk seals that went extinct in the last ~3 million years:
• Pliophoca etrusca from the Mediterranean
• The New Zealand monk seal Eomonachus belegaerensis, which my colleagues and I described last year! https://t.co/F25b5WOi2W
