When dinner fights back!
In a new study led by @DPHocking, we scanned and dissected a New Zealand fur seal with multiple facial wounds from chimaera fish and stingrays. Some of the spines were still in the #seal!
This is my second paper ever, read here:

Also, the amazing watercolours are done by my labmate @SilkeCleuren, you can check out some of her artwork on Instagram https://t.co/qAEuJUL63Y
Seals are the best semi-aquatic mammals: They can hear underwater and in air. Fully aquatic whales🐳 hear effectively underwater, and terrestrial mammals🐁 hear properly in air. Seals can do both!
Other semi-aquatic mammals can't do this! 🦦 3/N
#InternationalDayOfTheSeal
Today is #InternationalDayoftheSeal! The Ross Seal (Ommatophoca rossii) lives around Antarctica. We know surprisingly little about them. Their large eyes and short faces make them look like space aliens! 👽
This male Hooded seal skull is so extreme. All eyes 👀 nose👃and ears👂 leaving not much space for the brain 🧠 #PhD
Worked on some 3D scans of the #fossil pinniped Allodesmus kernensis today. Slowly getting through all of the data I collected in the USA.
This is Neomonachus tropicalis, the extinct Caribbean Monk Seal!
The multi-colour cloud shows just how many #data-points go into making a #3dmodel of a seal skull
Each colour represents a seperate surface scan
