I had thought that maybe Digimon might have played a hand in why Toei didn't carry on with Yu-Gi-Oh.
I am unsure is this now cause Digimon Adventure started airing on the 7th March 1999. The film released literally 1 day earlier at the Toei Fair alongside the Yu-Gi-Oh film.
I think I recall Ehoba mentioning that some Eva fans in the 90s mentioned that final episodes resembled underground theatre of the time.

Considering how "Talking Head" plays out I do wonder if Fumihiko Tachiki was reminded of Oshii's film while doing the voice work for 4.0.
@porntagonist Gall Force came out in late 1987 after ZZ came off the air. Maybe just another one of those cosmic coincidences.
Iv'e noticed that Takeshi Shudo mentions "Sasuga no Sarutobi" often in his entries. He has indeed written the script for 16 episodes for that anime. The most out of the other writers.
