'Ventnor, Isle of Wight' (1856, Maas Gall) & 'Pear' (@delartmuseum ) by artist & activist Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon (1827-1891) for #SisterhoodSunday. Bodichon befriended Siddal & Rossetti in Hastings, making this sketch of the former in 1854 (Mark Samuel Lasner Coll Delaware)
Some masculine input for this week's #GabrielGiovedi. Although far more associated with female portraiture, Rossetti's studies of men are both sensitive & impressive: head of farmer in 'Found' (1869), Ford Madox Brown (1867), male head study 1850s (Mus. of Fine Arts, Budapest).
Evelyn de Morgan's lyrical 'Cadence of Autumn' for #SisterhoodSunday. Plus a sumptuous study of a female head for the seated figure on the right (1905, @DeMorganF). The optimism of Spring & the 2 figures representing Summer changes to melancholy with Autumn & Winter on the left.
Excellent English artisan, embroidery designer, jeweller, socialist, writer & editor May Morris died #OTD in 1938. May was the younger daughter of William Morris & artists' model & embroiderer Jane Morris. In 1907, May founded the Women’s Guild of Arts with Mary Elizabeth Turner.
'Echo & Narcissus' (& studies) (1903 Walker Art Gall) for #WaterhouseWednesday. In Ovid's Metamorphosis Echo perishes for Narcissus who is then caused to fall in love with his own reflection as punishment by the Goddess Nemesis. A Narcissus flower grows on the spot where he dies.
A gilded image of harvest-time for this week's #NedNewsday: 'Frieze of Eight Women Gathering Apples' (1876 @Tate)
The theme of this panel, possibly a fireplace overmantel, may be the legend of the Garden of the Hesperides, a subject Burne-Jones treated on several other occasions.
Happy Birthday to marvellous & magical Evelyn de Morgan (nee Pickering) born #OTD in 1855
Her mythical, spiritual, allegorical paintings are simply out of this world. An amazing draughtswoman & "pioneering professional female artist" (De Morgan Fdn) @DeMorganF
#SisterhoodSunday
Rossetti working on 'The Day Dream' by Frederick Shields (1880 @Ashmolean) for this week's #GabrielGiovedi & the completed work (1880 @V_&_A) & study (@Ashmolean)- a burgeoning study in greens. 'She dreams; till now on her forgotten book/Drops the forgotten blossom from her hand'
Celebrating the work of Simeon Solomon this #FridayFavourite who died OTD in 1905. '4 Seasons' & 'Day & Night' (c1877 priv.coll). The PRS Autumn journal is a special issue on Solomon guest-edited by Dr Carolyn Conroy & Dr Roberto C Ferrari & should be out for members mid October!
Beatrix Potter was born #OTD in 1866. The Potter family were friends with Millais & Beatrix's incredible myopic studies of fungi surely echo the early Pre-Raphaelite fidelity to nature. Flora & Fauna abound in Beatrix's work, magical microcosms with a wonderful cast of characters
