The focus of this painting, given my personal bias, was on 's John Hickton and Phil Boersma but it should bear a dedication too, with the greatest respect, for Paul Madeley, the featured great player who has just passed away.

The last manager to lead us to promotion via the Play-Offs was Bruce Rioch in the 1987-88 season. In 1972-73, he'd been a player for today's opponents, , taking on a Nobby Stiles captained Boro (Bill Gates also pictured.) It's time to climb the mountain again.

Sorry to hear that ex- player, Arthur Fitzsimons (1949-59, 231 games, 51 goals) has died. He once said to me, in that gentle Irish accent: 'If you ever do a painting of me, will you make me look like Maradona!' No, Arthur, you were much better looking.

Sorry that I had to miss last week's dinner in honour of Charlton's Champions. But these pieces are among my tributes to an unforgettable era.
