1. In the night of 9 to 10 October, at 10 to 1, a train arrives in Amsterdam. According to a reporter present, the men, women and children who alight are in an 'indescribable condition'. They are Belgians who are fleeing the violence of war in their own country.

Seeing the old photo of a man painting in the Rijksmuseum I wondered what the huge portrait of a horseman could be. This gallery exhibits paintings from the Van der Hoop collection so I looked there and found it: an unknown horseman, attributed to "Spanish school", c1610.

These drawings were probably made art for sale to collectors. At the same time the nature of the penwork made them particularly suitable for reproduction as prints, and indeed this drawing is a preparatory study, of identical size, for one of Gandolfi’s very few etchings. 2/2

Bought by the precursor of the Rijksmuseum as early as 1823; I wonder as by whom. Not loved enough to repair the split in the panel. Never ever seen it on display. Wonder if it's a fragment?

Jan Baptist Weenix and Bartholomeus van der Helst, young shepherd with sheep and goats, c1647-49. I am intrigued by this painting every time I see it - the idea of the two masters working side by side on this wonderful image.

@RousBenjamin Ook Van Baburen's "Koppelaarster" (waar Baburen verschillende versies schilderde, werd door Vermeer gebruikt.
