Böcklin was back in Munich by 1872. Self-Portrait (1872), Nymph on Pan’s Shoulders (1874), Vestalin (1874) & Idyll (1875). Nowadays we see the escapism of his work & it’s lack of imagination, but at the time such work was part of popular culture & yearning.
One of my favourite aspects (as a woodland ecologist) of Brueghel’s work is his intimate knowledge of sylviculture where you can see pollarding, coppicing & other tree management. These were to provide poles, timber, wattle & foliage for hay. The Gloomy Day (1565)
The Adoration of the Kings (1556-62) & Death of the Virgin (c1564). The former is unique in his work in being a figure led image. Soldiers are a reference to the troubled times in the Low Countries. There is no attempt to idealise.
Like many artists he was fascinated & moved by music (others included Klee & Gainsborough) & he created lithographs inspired by melody. Homage á Berlioz (nd) & To Robert Schumann (c1893)
He sought to create semi-erotic nudes from time to time. These have a Victorian lack of sensuality. The Toilet of Venus (1891), Asters (1892), The Embroiderers (1895) & the Night (c1897)
Flowers in a Porcelain Vase (1863), White Cup & Saucer (1864), Homage á Delacroix (1864) & White Roses & Cherries (1865). His Homage includes many of his artist friends including himself, Legros, Whistler & Manet.
The art of Ghirlandaio is to be found in the ancient Italian cities. A mere handful of works is found abroad. Here is his self-portrait. I recommend travelling &, if not possible, this monograph by Cadogan.
Adoration of the Magi (1487 & 1488) - he returned to the Adoration several times. It was a subject close to his heart as his Sassetti Chapel version had made his name. It’s instructive to see the development of his art through the subject.
The Visitation (1486-90) is one of his most lyrical works. The many women portrayed are exquisite in their beauty. They were members of the family that commissioned the work.
Marriage of Mary, S Maria Novella (1486-90). Frescoes must be painted quickly in patches as the plaster dries & are one of the most challenging art forms - he was the master.
