Holbein died in 1543. His was a brief life but his art informed our image of royalty & Tudor Court. His drawings are some of the finest & his paintings fascinating. Henry Wyatt (1537), Frances de Vere (c1535), Portrait of a Lady (c1540) & Wm Reskimer (c1532)
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) died OTD. Born in Milan & triumphant in Rome, the artist was one of the most influential in history. The main picture is of The Taking of Christ (1602), a portrait of the artist by Ottavio Leoni (1621) and his John the Baptist (1600)
Thread: Zinaida Serebriakova (1884-1967) was a Russian aristocratic painter whose work is charming & competent. Her work is likeable & decorative & importance rests in her original charting of domesticity. Self-portrait (1908-9), Self-portrait (1911) & Self-portrait (1911).
One of McGuinness’ most famous works is Garden Green. Vine Terrace, Italy (1960), In the Algarve (1961), Crete (c1959) & Garden Green (1962). You can see her work in public galleries across Ireland.

In 1958 he was knighted. He got cancer in 1959 but still painted a striking self-portrait. He passed away at Cliveden. Self-portrait (1959), Sibyl Williams (1955), Marriage at Cana (1953) & Hilda & I at Pond Street (1954). A great artist worth seeking out.
