In 1638 his reputation was assured by being named Painter to the King of France. He was also commissioned by the Dukes of Lorraine (1623-4). He mostly worked for the local middle class. Repentant Magdalen (1635-40), Job (1630s) & Women Catching Fleas (1630s)

Penitent St Jerome is known from two variations. de la Tour painted a number of duplicates. The first (1620s) is in Stockholm & the second at Grenoble. They do vary but were probably based on the same drawing (technically called a cartoon) - a not uncommon practise in art.

Historians believe, based on his works & their style, that he possibly travelled to Italy or the Netherlands. In my opinion it’s likely he spent time in Utrecht where he absorbed the style of the Carravaggisti there. The Musicians Brawl (1625-30) & The Payment of Dues (1630-5)

His influence in French art was such that he won the Grand Médaille d’Honneur in 1865, 1867 & 1878. Death of Francesca da Rimini (1870), La Comtesse de Keller (1873) & Echo (1874). They were of the melodramatic taste of the time with enough nudity to tickle his patrons urges.

He was central to the Salon & was on the judging committee & promoted the work of his students. Thus he was a central influence of official style. Death of Moses (1851), Self-Portrait (1852) & Boniface & Aglaia (c1857)

His fame continued after his death, for some time, & a Segantini Museum was set up in San Moritz in 1908. Male Torso, Evening, Landscape & Shepherdess Asleep
