Goya’s portrait of Bartolomé Sureda y Miserol (c1803/4) is one of my favourites. The image is one of a debonair young man with the artist using flashes of colour to bring excitement to the image. Miserol was a clever man who became an industrialist.

The gallery has a number of sensuous paintings in the collection. We are more use to thinking of his transcendental saints but here flesh is stretched & rippled into erotic form. An artist whose work is always exciting.

Fête Champêtre (possibly with or by Titian, 1508-9). Both Titian & Giorgione were associated. Some claimed he was Titian’s master, others that they were fellow students. However Titian’s early work is derived in part from Giorgione. Their closeness is best shown in this work

The genius of Giorgione was his break from the past & it’s archaic style in Venetian art. Portrait of a Warrior with his Equerry (c1509), Adoration of the Kings (1506-7) & Portrait of an Old Woman (c1508)

Rubens painted a number of paintings about love. His most unusual was of George Villiers for his lover, the English King, in the 1620s. Here’s Ruben’s image of his 2nd wife Helena Fourment (1636-8) & his 1st Isabella Brant (c1609)

American Paul Cadmus, one of the finest painters of the human form, painted Jerry in 1931. It’s an intense & intimate picture of his lover Jared French. Another observation of forbidden love is his matter of fact scene of gay domesticity (The Bath, 1951)

Rembrandt’s The Jewish Bride (c1665-9) is, in my opinion, the best love painting in history. The ballet of hands & gesture are superlative

His Nude is a homage to Rembrandt & Grace an essay in Impressionism (he collected their work). Nude (1900), Grace Reading at Howth (1900) & Herbert Barnard John Everett (c1900)

The 1930s saw him create his own unique landscape language. His portrait of Arnold hints at his repressed gay vision (note the nude swimmers). Calendulas (1928-9), Stone City Iowa & Study (1930) & Arnold Comes of Age (1930)
