Zurbarán’s work has been overshadowed by others. He is, in my opinion, one of the great old masters. His depictions of the Virgin are particularly beautiful. The Young Virgin (c1632-3) & St Sebastian (nd)

Allegory of Charity (1655), The Immaculate Conception as a Child (1656) & Immaculate Conception (1660s). The latter is an exquisite work with the beautiful Mart dressed in exquisite Lake Blue cape augmented with a rose pink bow. It is in @NGIreland

He married a third time in 1644. The Virgin of Mercy (1630-50), Still Life (c1640) & Still Life (1640). It’s notable that he saw his religious images as objects of mediation whereas his fruit pieces are painted for maximum veracity.

He often returned to painting images of the Virgin & appears to have used the same model for each image. Immaculate Conception (1630-5), St Margaret of Antioch (1631) & Still Life with Lemons, Oranges & a Rose (1633)

In 1628 he was commissioned to paint 22 pictures by the Mercedarians. Nativity of the Virgin (1628), Apparition of St Peter to St Peter of Nolasco (1629) & the Lying in State of St Bonaventura (1629)

Towards the end of his life his mental health began to collapse. His support for the Civil Rights movement was made more painful by the murder of MLK, JFK & RFK. His state worried his friends. Michael Frelich (1965), Self-Portrait (1971) & Abstract (1963)

He was recognised as one of NYC great expressionists by the time of WWII. He spent time in nature at Yaddo in Upstate NY. This would increase his abstraction & lead to thoughts of Paris. Can Fire in the Park (1946), Village Street Scene (1948) & Untitled (1947)

He painted emotion, his inner life & tended to a more abstract vision. In his art he could be himself. He was inspired by jazz & spirit. Friends included Georgia O’Keeffe & Henry Miller. O’Keefe would draw Delaney in 1943 (pic), The Picnic (1940) & Self-Portrait (1944)

1932 saw his work exhibited at the NY Public Library. He joined the NY Art Students League meeting his friend Jackson Pollock. He was also part of the Haarlem Art Guild & an art teacher. Exchange Place (1943), Untitled (c1945) & Untitled (1945)
