By 1517 he was in Lucerne & prob went to Italy too. He became fascinated with the work of Mantegna - both artists favouring crisp lines & clarity in their approach. He returned to Basel in 1519. Self Portrait (c1542) & two Mantegna portraits (c1460-70) & Francesco Gonzaga (1461)

The same yr Holbein was asked to illustrate Erasmus’ In Praise of Folly (1511). He also created a double portrait & Study (1516) of the Mayor of Basel & his Wife. The artist was also depicted, with his brother, in his father’s Basilica Triptych (1504). Adam & Eve (1517)

The artist died in Bayswater in 1863, aged 77. Hands (1860), Academic Studies (nd) & Study (nd). There have been exhibitions of his work in the past but it’s clear that another one, especially of his treatment of the nude is needed.

Mulready’s nudes are some of the finest in British & Irish art (he holds that talent with William Etty). Giving a Bite (1834), Male Nude (nd) & Female Nude (nd). Patronage by Sheepshanks allowed him devote more time to this superb ability.

Initially he painted landscapes before, as his reputation grew, he turned to genre by 1808. His first works were shown at the 1804 RA exhibition. Suffolk Landscape (c1810), John Varley (1814) & Horses (1816). Varley was his brother-in-law.

John Duncan Fergusson (1874-1961) was another colourist. On the Cap (1920s), Pink Carnations & Narcissi (nd), Landscape (1916) & Paris Plage (1902). Fergusson was particularly interested in French art movements. It’s worth noting that Scotland & France have ‘an auld alliance’

John Peploe (1871-1935) was one of the Scottish colourists. His paintings have a superb understanding of colour & sophistication. Barra (1903), Peonies (1900-5), Tulips & Fruit (c1912) & Pink Roses (nd)

Gavin Hamilton (1723-98) was a Scottish born artist who spent most of his time in Rome. He was an accomplished painter who created elegant & cosmopolitan works. Elizabeth Gunning (c1752 & 1752-3) & James Dawkins & Robert Wood (1758)
