Born in Pennsylvania, she graduated from high school in 1918 & joined the Civil Service. She took art classes at night before enrolling in the Philadelphia School of Design in ‘21. Initially she embraced realism. Mother & Child, Havana (1926) & Beggars, Havana (1926)

Alma Thomas died in her Washington home in 1978, aged 86. Falling Leaves Love Wind Orchestra (1977), Untitled (1978) & Hydrangeas Spring Song (1976). She is one of the great American artists of the 20th C. The Smithsonian has a good group of her works.

Her painting is all about colour & her canvases sing with her appreciation of the spectrum. Untitled (c1958), Untitled (c1958) & the Stormy Sea (1958). These are luscious charismatic works.

Nussbaum & his wife Felka left for Belgium (c1934) & remained there for 10 years. The Refugee, Brussels (1939), Unidentified Man (1941), Still-Life with Mask, Glove & Football (1940) & Prisoner (1940). His refugee sits with nowhere to turn as a globe stands by, indifferent.
