In Madrid (1628-9) he befriended the great Spanish artist Velázquez. Study of St Apollonia (nd), Head (nd) & Isabella (1625-6)

Due to an affair with Anna, his father was imprisoned. Following his father’s death the family moved to Antwerp (1589) where Rubens was raised a Catholic. Duke of Lerma (1603) & Virgin & Child (c1604)
Rubens’ parents fled Antwerp for Cologne to avoid religious persecution. He was born in Siegen & christened in Cologne. His father became an advisor to Anna of Saxony. Portrait (1597), Adam & Eve (1599) & the Deposition (1602).
