This is one of my favourite little paintings by Rembrandt. Jeremiah (1630) is lamenting the destruction of Jerusalem. The feeling of sadness & loss is palpable. The miller’s son really understood & translated emotion. Viewed in the museum, the sadness is devastating.

The Merry Drinker (c1628-30) is a famed painting by Hals. It’s both a portrait & a type depiction - here, a happy drunk. Hals’ genius was in his understanding of how brushwork would appear. Eschewing fine detail he painted with broad strokes which give energy to the image

Scottish art has always been diverse with many different styles including Celtic inspired works. William Dyce (1837) Francesco da Rimini, James Paterson (1887) Autumn in Glencairn, Joseph Crawhall (c1895) The White Drake & John Duncan (1913) Saint Bride

There is a small but extremely choice collection of Spanish works. El Greco (1577-9) An Allegory, Velázquez (1618) An Old Woman Cooking Eggs & Murillo’s Personification of Summer (1640). The Old Woman is one of Velázquez’s earliest works.

Jacopo Bassano’s Adoration of the Kings (1542), Guercino’s The Virgin & Child (c1615) & Giovanni Battista Pittoni’s (1725) The Apotheosis of St Jerome with St Peter of Alcántara & a Franciscan. The historic-style hanging of works in the museum add to their dramatic qualities.

By May 1890 Vincent moved to N France to Auvers-Sur-Oise, under the care of Dr Gachet. Two of his last landscapes are the ominous Wheatfield under Thunder Clouds & Wheatfield with Crows. They echo his mental state & struggle (he said they represented his sadness & loneliness)

Danu is the Celtic goddess of the earth. In different parts of Ireland she had different attributes- a feature common to Celtic religion. I see her as representing the hopes of millennia of people.
