Later works focus on faces & are characterised by an intensity not seen earlier. They have an unsettling quality in their emotional honesty. Helen of Troy (1894), Sleep (1894), Angel of Death (1896) & David & Saul (1896)

His later works are more emotional & less detailed. His Love Wounded seems like another allegorical self-portrait. Love Wounded (1888), Twilight, Pity & Death (1889), Night & Her Child Sleep (1892), Thou Shalt Not Tempt (1894)

Solomon was arrested in London in 1873 & fined for homosexual acts & in Paris in 1874 where he was sentenced to 3 months in prison. He was ruined. A Jewish King & His Page (1873), Allegorical Self-Portrait (1873), Hebrew Girl (1874) & The Magic Crystal (1878)

Walter Pater (1872), Judith & Her Attendant (1872) & Daniel (1873). Pater was a major essayist, was a friend of the PRB, & wrote about the Renaissance. His work on Botticelli was v influential on them.

What might once have been dismissed as excess of Victorian feeling is now understood as ‘hiding in plain sight’ & a revolutionary act. The Mystery of Faith (1870), Then I knew my Soul & He & I Went Forth Together (1871), Love Dreaming by the Sea (1871) & Night & Sleep (1872)

His Deacon is one of his most finished works & presents his view of ideal male beauty, just as his Sappho indicates a female equivalent. A Deacon (1863), Sappho & Erinna (1864), Poetry (1864) & Girl at a Fountain (1865)

Many of his works are in regional galleries, as well as in the Tate & @TheHughLane in Dublin where his Moses hangs. The Finding of Moses (1862), Abraham & Isaac & Hossanah, from Dalziel’s Bible Gallery (1863-81) & Two Acolytes (1863)

Throughout his work there is a sensuality that borders on decadence - Ezekiel & the Angel is an example of that. The Mother of Moses (1860), Sappho (1862) & Ezekiel & the Angel (1861) & the Painter’s Pleasaunce (1861)

Solomon has his own unique vision & although us work was part of the PRB vision he followed his own path. Self-Portrait (1859), Dante’s First Meeting with Beatrice (1859-63), the Return of the Prodigal Son (1857) & Study for a Hebrew Musician (1860)

Francis Bacon (1909-92) was a great Irish artist who captured the horror, disaster & evil of the 20th century with its catastrophic oppression & wars. He was a nihilist, an exile & a gay man in an era of destruction (self portraits, 1970 & 1973)
