Rembrandt (1606-69) painted his lover Hendrickje Stoffels in c1659. Its clear from the portrait how important she was to him. Although they lived together they were unmarried & this led to the relationship being criticised by the Church authorities.
Piero di Cosimo’s (c1490) Venus, Mars & Cupid was originally a decorative panel on a piece of furniture, a marriage chest. The message here is that love conquers war.
Hans Holbein (1497-1543) is famed as a court portraitist to King Henry VIII as well as painting friends in London. One of the finest of these portraits is that of Georg Gisze (1532), a Hanseatic merchant based in the city. The work is populated by symbolism

His etchings are much sought after. Night in the El Train (1918), Night in the Park (1921) & Evening Wind (1921) show his ongoing interest in nighttime images as well as isolated figures
In 1915 the artist painted his mother, a woman who had a strong impact on him. Also shown are two early sel-portraits (1903 & 1906). Hopper’s work as an artist matured into the style we know today around 1920
Hopper grew up in a strict family & was uncomfortable with emotion. Indeed it’s reported that he was disturbed by the nude models at art school in NY city. His early work is characterised by this emotional discomfort. Shown are 2 early self-portraits & a figure study
