The Far Right forced Kollwitz to resign her professorship & she started on her Death Cycle including The Call of Death (self-portrait), Young Girl in the Lap of Death & Death Seizing a Woman (1934). It’s hard not to see these as symbolic of the collapse of German civilisation

Thread: Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) is considered the greatest German landscape artist of his time. A key Romantic painter he explored the metaphysical role of human & nature. He truly captured the sublime.

Botticelli was considered decadent in the 19th C. Indeed Wilde was one of his promoters. Conservative society was uncomfortable with the nudity, the beautiful youths & indeed the suppressed emotion. Today, it is for these reasons he is loved.

When he turns to painting his favoured young men he gives us not just beauty but also likenesses. Rarely does he combine a portrait with truth & beauty unless it’s a young man. Portrait of a Young Man (c1483, c1483 & c1485)
