Irish friends can see a number of Lawrence’s best works including his Duchess of Devonshire. For a comparison of his work - here’s a portrait, too, by Joshua Reynolds. Apology I can’t find a decent jpeg of the National Gallery of Ireland version

In 1827 he exhibited his Red Boy (William Lambton) to great acclaim. Countess of Darnley (c1825-30), Lady Caroline Lamb (1827), A Baby (nd) & Mother & Child (?1810). Many of his portraits were unfinished at the time of his death & show his working technique

By 1820 he was back in London where he was voted President of the RA. In 1822 he was elected FRS. The Calmady Children (1820), Little Red Riding Hood (c1821), Countess of Blessington (1822) & Lord Dover (c1823-4)

In 1818 he visited the Continent & painted much of what would become the Waterloo Series now hanging in Windsor Castle. Madame Isaac Cuthbert (1816-7), First Earl of Blessington (c1816) & Robert Stewart (1817). The Blessingtons grew the first pineapple in Ireland!

He created a number of studies of the King & his assistants duplicated them for various clients & official reasons. His ability to give the infamous King dignity made him popular with the monarch. Sir Charles Stewart (1814), Duke of Wellington (1814), George IV (1814 & 1816)

Only a few artists have been able to paint both men & women with empathy & Lawrence was one such painter. General Sir John Moore (c1805), Emily Lamb (1803), Elizabeth Williams (1804) & William Lamb (1805)

Lawrence’s reputation as England’s greatest living portraitist was established by the time of the Regency & the Prince would become his patron. Sir Herbert Taylor (c1797), Satan as a Fallen Angel (c1797), Charles Bell (1798) & Amelia Lock (1799)

After his parents died in 1797 he moved his studio to their home in London, together with his assistants (including William Etty). Woman (c1796-8), Sir Samuel Shepherd (c1796) & Satan Summoning his Legions (1796-7). The latter may have been inspired by Henry Fuseli.

A feature of the artist was his chronic indebtedness. It’s believed it was due to supporting his family & his collection of superb art. Emily & Harriet Lamb (1792), Lady Jane Long (1793) & Sarah Moulton (Pinkie) 1794. His images have come to define regency beauty.

Thread: Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) was an English portraitist whose work shows considerable dash & empathy with his sitters. His art, long unfashionable in the UK & IRL is now being recognised as some of the finest of the Romantic period - take a look! He was born on this day.
