He died in 1891 at the early age of 31. It’s not known what he died of but tragically his son died of the same disease. He left his last major work, The Circus (1891), unfinished. The Circus (1890-1), Fields in Summer (nd) & Straw Stacks (nd)
He painted his partner Madeleine Knoblock in 1888-90 who was an artist’s model. She moved into his studio with him in 1889. A year later they had a son. Study for his partner (1889-90), Painting of his partner (1889-90), The Seine (1888) & Le Crotoy (1889)
In 1884 he painted A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. This pointillist work, where the colours fuse from a distance, combines social classes relaxing. It took 2 years & is his most significant experiment in chromaticism. Sunday, Forest (1883), Rainbow (1883)
In 1883 he worked on his early masterpiece Bathers at Asnières. His image was of working class people relaxing, which he painted in the studio (a practice eschewed by Impressionists). The Mower (1881-2), Boy (c1882), Artist’s Mother (1882-3) & Study for Bathing (1883)
