Born into a strict Jewish family in NYC he was keen on art. Although his dad became a well-off self-made man, the artist chose to stay in the working class emigrant area. His illustrations for Spirit of the Ghetto (1902) show early genius.

He ceased to paint on his appointment & gave himself over to research, travel & collecting art for the Gallery. His single-minded approach increased the gallery’s reputation dramatically. The artist was knighted in 1884 & Trinity awarded him a LL.D. in 1889.

Burton became associated with the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1855. He moved to London in 1858. Shireen (nd), Mary Palliser (nd) & Cassandra Fedele (nd). He became engaged to Palliser, who was from Waterford, but they never married.

In 1963, following the death of her husband, she moved to Texas to be with her daughter. In the 1970s she revisited her old paintings & painted some of them again. Girl with Guitar (1963), Young Woman (1967) & Head of a Woman (c1967)

At the outbreak of War in 1939 the couple moved to the US. Her work was widely exhibited. In 1943 they moved on to NYC. Young Lady (1939), At the Opera (1941) & Calla Lillies (1941). She continued to focus on glamorous portraits & added still life to her repertoire

She married again in 1933 & she convinced her husband to sell up & move to Switzerland. The rise of the Far Right led to their move. Marjorie Ferry (1932), Sleeping Woman (1935) & The Refugees (1937). The latter was a rare political reference, for her, of the flight from Hitler.

That year she travelled to the US & held an exhibit of her work in Pittsburgh. The show was a success, but she lost the monies earned in the Wall Street Crash. St Moritz (1929), Women Bathing (1929) & Madame M (1930)
