1929 saw her create her self-portrait driving a Bugatti for the cover of a magazine. It has become a symbol of the Art Deco style. La Belle Rafaela (1927), Young Ladies (1927), Maternity (1928) & the Artist’s Husband (1928)
She was born in upper middle class Warsaw to a Jewish father & Catholic mother & was drawing by the age of 10. From 1912-5 she lived in St Petersburg & married a Polish lawyer in 1916. Red Haired Woman (1922), Ira Perrot (1923), the Marquis (c1923) & Two Friends (1923)
The 1930s saw him create his own unique landscape language. His portrait of Arnold hints at his repressed gay vision (note the nude swimmers). Calendulas (1928-9), Stone City Iowa & Study (1930) & Arnold Comes of Age (1930)
From 1922-35 Wood lived with his mother in Cedar Rapids. Woman with Plant {Mother-in-Law’s Tongue} (1929), Patchwork Quilt (1929) & Urns (1924). His eyes were opened to authentic American subjects inspired by his reading & learning.
Born in Iowa he studied at the The Handicraft Guild in Minneapolis (1910). He returned to Iowa to teach in 1911 & in 1913 he enrolled at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago . The Landscape of Autumn (1919), The Shaking Poplar (1917), Paris Street (1920) & Conduit (1920)
The Norman Rockwell Museum holds 700 of his works. His work is still extremely popular & has influenced commercial cinematography in particular. Coming & Going (1947) & Statue of Liberty (1946). Few artists have charted the contemporary society of their time with such genius.
The role of African Americans in society was something he cared deeply about, just as he was keen to document the space race. Spring is in the Air (1969), Apollo 11 Space Team (1969), The Final Impossibility (1969) & The Collector (1971)
He was artist in residence at Otis College in the ‘40s with some of his students being co-opted into sitting for him! Road Block (1949), Which One? (1944), Disabled Veteran (1944) & the Homecoming (1945)
