Thread: Giovanni Boldini (1842-1931) was born on this day. His was a cautionary tale of style over substance & reputation over ability. Applauded in his lifetime as a society portraitist, his work has aged badly & has the ability to make the viewer feel quite ill.
Here’s my Top 10 movies for Christmas based on humour, art & watchability. Other movies are available but they’re not as good!
Thread: For many years Jack Butler Yeats (1871-1957) has been held up by the Irish establishment as the greatest Irish painter. Let’s take a look at his work. The White Horse (1956)
Thread: Today in 1901 Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) self-published her childrens’ classic The Tale of Peter Rabbit. She was a gifted illustrator & a keen conservationist as well as a story teller.
Thread: Happy Birthday Georgia O’Keefe (1887-1986). The Irish-American painter has been described as the mother of American modernism. Radiator Building - Night, New York (1927), Red Hills & White Shell (1938) & Music Pink & Blue II (1918)
Venetian paintings are represented by some exquisite works including Veronese (Venus & Mercury, c1555-60) & Titian (Self-Portrait, c1562). Other schools are represented by great work too. Michelangelo (Study, nd) & Annibale Carracci (Self-Portrait, c1590)
One of the key men in Sargent’s life was Thomas E McKeller. He was a bellhop in Boston when the artist found him. Sargent was one of the first to have a male muse. McKeller’s torso & face regularly appears in his work. McKeller (1917), frescoes & studies.
Even today his work is little known outside of specialist circles. However with an increased recognition of the struggle for human rights his art & life have been recognised for their importance. The Boy John (1903), Divine Charity & Sleep (1905), Love & Lust & Orpheus (1896)
I love his self-portraits. It’s as if he is carving himself out of the paint. Self-portraits (c1917), Herrings & a Bottle of Chianti (c1917) & Flowers on a Chair (c1917)
