16 May 1777 Internecine strife in Georgia leads to a duel & British-born signer of the Declaration, Button Gwinnett, is wounded by Whig Lachlan McIntosh. Days later, Gwinnett died from the gangrenous wound. McIntosh was also shot in the duel but lived.

13 May 1781 Petersburg, VA. British Gen William Phillips dies suddenly of typhoid fever, forcing Gen Benedict Arnold to assume command of British forces in Virginia.

12 May 1780 Charleston, SC. American Gen Benjamin Lincoln’s unconditional surrender, giving up over 3K men, 6K muskets & 400 guns to British Gen Henry Clinton, is the greatest US disaster of Frigates Boston, Providence & Ranger captured too.

11 May 1776 NYC. In a letter to the president of Congress, Gen George Washington recommended raising companies of German-Americans to use against the German mercenaries hired by Britain. & engender a spirit of disaffection among Britain's paid soldiers.

7 May 1780 Charleston, SC. Ft Moultrie surrendered to British forces with 200 men marched into captivity. The next morning Sullivan Island will be occupied, leaving the city exposed to a naval attack.

7 May 1777 To bolster the defense of the Delaware, several men in Capt. Jonathan Clark’s company 8th VA transferred to service on “row gallies,” large rowboats, each with a cannon mounted in the front. Oars made them more maneuverable than British ships.
