June 1777. Gen Arthur St. Clair was given command of Ft Ticonderoga. St. Clair’s 3000 men were naked, undisciplined & badly armed. St. Clair knew that a slow moving British force was on the lake. It didn’t occur to him that a large force would move slowly -- led by John Burgoyne.
#OTD 1783 the 1st meeting of the Society of the Cincinnati was held at Fishkill, NY. The plan for the society to maintain wartime relationships was drafted by Henry Knox. Alexander Hamilton chaired the meeting. Knox was elected secretary. GW was named president in his absence.
12-May-1780. Benjamin Lincoln surrendered Charleston, SC to the British. GW advised him to abandon the city but the civil authorities begged him to stay. Lincoln was denied the honors of war. Col John Laurens, who was there, would repay that denial at the surrender of Yorktown.
May 1781. The “War of the Posts” - After Lord Rawdon abandoned Camden, Nathanael Greene turned his attention to a string of British forts in South Carolina. He sent Lee, Marion, & Sumter on raids and the forts began falling: Fort Motte, Fort Granby, Orangeburg, & Nelson’s Ferry.
5-May-1778. The news of the Franco/American alliance reached Valley Forge. To celebrate, Steuben performed a troop review, a feu de joie was fired, an open-air church service & banquet were held. Genls' wives who attended were Martha Washington, Caty Greene & Lady Sarah Stirling.

I learned something new today. General Mordecai Gist of Maryland is represented in John Trumbull’s painting “Surrender of Lord Cornwallis” (back row, right side) #24 on the key to the painting. I knew Gist was at the siege & fought in the South, but I was unaware of this.
The Burial of General Simon Fraser after the Battle of Saratoga, 1777 original by John Graham. The first 2 men in the painting from left to right are Generals William Phillips & John Burgoyne. The man to the far right is Gen Friedrich Riedesel. Fraser is of course the dying man.
