#OTD 1776 the Battle of Assunpink Creek was fought between GW & Cornwallis. In the smoke & confusion, Cornwallis called for his troops to fall back 3 times. When night fell, he declared, “I shall wait to bag the fox in the morning.” In the morning “the fox” & his army were gone.
#OTD 1776 GW opened a devastating letter from Charles Lee to Joseph Reed criticizing GW: “I receiv’d your most obliging flattering letter—lament with you that fatal indecision of mind which in war is a much greater disqualification than stupidity or even want of personal courage”
8 Oct 1777, Gen Simon Fraser died after he was shot at the Battle of Bemis Heights by one of Col Daniel Morgan’s riflemen (legend says Timothy Murphy). Baroness Riedesel helped care for him. He requested to be buried at the evening gun near the Great Redoubt attended by his men
John Adams in a letter following Bunker Hill:
“Alass poor Warren!...President of the Congress, Chairman of the Committee of Safety, Major General...was too much for mortal, and This Accumulation of Admiration upon one Gentleman, which among the Hebrews was called Idolatry...”
June 1778. As Clinton withdrew from Philly, GW called a war council. Anthony Wayne, favored an offensive & referring to Clinton’s baggage train said “we may Inculcate the Idea of Burgoyning Clinton…and you will more than probable Effect it.” LOL. Wayne used Burgoyning as a verb.

I'm reading this bio on Caty Greene and just got to the part where Nathanael Greene dies on June 19, 1786. Anthony Wayne was there. He wrote to those in Savannah. "I have just seen a great and good man die..."
I sobbed like a baby when I read that.
