You, an idiot: "If we want fantasy fiction to be accepted by mainstream, we'll have to focus on more adult themes and less magical nonsense."
Me, a genius:
These are Modrons. In D&D, they are beings of absolute law and order. You can tell by the fact that they have two essential components to Lawful beings: geometric shapes and soft, kissable lips.
Dwarves, Elves and Orcs are cool and all, but I always think JRPGs had the best fantasy races. The character design for Breath of Fire 2 was so on point.
I don't think it's a common sentiment, but the style of monsters in Ralph Bakshi's animated THE HOBBIT scared the piss out of me as a kid.
A great thing about Dungeons and Dragons is that there is an entire category of monsters that can be accurately summarized as "a wizard got high as hell and this is what happened"
Recurring Themes in Dungeons & Dragons:
1. The world is full of adventure
2. Goodness shines brightest in the dark
3. Frogs are seriously bad news, man
3a. They will mess you up, dude. Don't you ever think a frog is your friend
