For the rest of their stay Alfie and Grandma found nice things to do together.
Annie Rose was so much better and she was so pleased to see Alfie again that she hugged him round the waist.
Alfie on Holiday
When Alfie was digging sandcastles by himself Lee’s mum strolled by. ‘I’m sorry Lee hasn’t had time to play with Alfie today, he has so many friends you see.’
Alfie at the Seaside
That afternoon when the tide was out Alfie and Lee paddled in the shallow water and collected shells and bits of seaweed. There were lots of other children splashing about, and Lee seemed to know most of them.

Just nearby, another boy of about Alfie’s age was building a sandcastle too. His castle was bigger than Alfie’s. It had a moat around it and flags flying from the top.

Alfie’s little sister Annie Rose was not feeling well. Dad was at work and Alfie’s best friend Bernard who lived nearby was on holiday. Alfie had no one to play with and he was very bored. So he was very, very happy when Grandma arrived.

‘I won’t tell anybody,’ said Valerie, ‘about you being a sea god…’
Cherubino was poised to jump. Then he turned back. ‘By the way, sea gods can love humans sometimes, you know. Now and again - every thousand years or so. A very unusual human that is.’

While Miss McKenzie was fussing with the luggage, Valerie slipped over to Cherubino’s side and took his hand.‘Let’s go down to the sea!’ she whispered. And together they ran.

Pietro was given orders to bring the car round and drive Valerie and her mother across the city to the orphanage. They found Cherubino standing in line with the other boys.
So it was that Valerie’s mother offered Cherubino a home.

The gardens around the lake were empty. The boy on the dolphin stood alone. Valerie put her face close to his ear and whispered:
‘You are my best friend. I love you and I am going to give you a name… Cherubino.’
Enchantment in the Garden
Valerie was an only child. She was too serious for her age and had more toys and dresses than she could possibly need. But she had few friends and, of course, she was lonely.
