At six o’clock everything’s was ready. They all keep as quiet as mice - even Annie Rose! Alfie was so excited he had to cling on to Dad’s hand as Bob opened the front door.

Annie Rose was already asleep and Alfie was in his dressing gown having a story when Maureen rang the doorbell. She was carrying a basket tied up with string.

The party for Bob was such a big secret that Jean MacNally came over to Alfie’s house specially to make the birthday cake in their kitchen. Alfie helped her to put on the candles - five blue ones and two pink ones.

The MacNallys were all very fond of Smoky. But Bob and he were special friends. When Bob came home from work he always stopped for a chat with Smoky.

Alfie lay awake for a long time after Neal had gone to sleep, thinking about the Flying Loobies. Finally he crept out of bed and went to fetch Dad. Dad came straight away and knew exactly what to do.

Neal was very good at telling jokes. He made Alfie laugh a lot.
‘What are you doing?’ Alfie whispered.
‘I’m just checking whether the Flying Loobies are here yet. They nearly always sleep under my bed. I just hope they’ve been able to find their way here.’

There, perched on the back of a chair, they saw an owl. It turned its head round and stared at them with big, shining eyes. Its steady gaze made it look more like a person than a bird.
