‘I expect it was a selkie you heard singing,’ said Morag. Of course I didn’t know what a selkie was, so she told me.
From Sea Singing in Stories by Firelight
Morag likes the sea best in winter. ‘Summer is fun, and it’s a wonderful thing to have friends. But I am always quite glad when they all go home and let me get on with my painting.’
Sea Singing from Stories by Firelight
Did I tell you about the time I heard singing coming from the sea?
When I told Mum’s friend, Morag, about the singing, she didn’t seem in the least surprised.
Morag’s house is high up on the cliff. There’s a room with a big window where she does her painting.
From Sea Singing
This week we will be looking at Sea Singing, which is in Shirley’s Stories by Firelight collection. First published in 1993, the School Librarian said of the book, ‘The skilful marriage of text and illustration work perfectly… a tour de force.’
At last they arrived! The sea was huge, almost as big as the sky. It stretched away and away, full of sparkling light. Far out there were big waves.
Alfie stood still and looked. He just couldn’t stop looking.
Bonting - a story in The Big Alfie Out of Doors Storybook
Mum gave Alfie a box lined with cotton-wool for Bonting to sleep in. Alfie asked Mum if she would please make some clothes for Bonting too. Mum said that Bonting looked as though he might be a difficult shape to fit, but she would do her best.

Sally showed Rose her secret house and they had a tea party.
‘Let’s stay here for ever,’ said Rose.
From Sally’s Secret
Sally set out all the things in her house. Sally was so pleased she didn’t want her secret house to be secret any more! Her friend Rose was in the next-door garden.
‘Come and have a tea party in my secret house,’ said Sally.
From Sally’s Secret
This week we will be looking through the pages of Sally’s Secret
Once there was a little girl called Sally who liked making houses. She made them in all sorts of places - behind curtains, under tables, inside boxes and under umbrellas.
Proper Words
Annie Rose could walk quite well, but she couldn’t talk properly yet.
‘Why don’t you teach your baby to talk properly?’ Bernard asked Alfie.
